The U-12 team 1 welcomed table toppers, Ballyboden St. Enda’s, to Pairc Ui Bhriain in round 3 of the Cup competition on Saturday February 13th. Like our previous 2 games, the opposition raced into a 1-2 lead. Unlike the last 2 games, Olaf’s kept their heads and kept plugging away. This was huge effort and after 10 minutes we were back on level terms with a goal and point from Tom Keane and a point from Fiachra O’Sullivan. ‘Boden shifted up a couple of gears for the remainder of the half and started scoring at will. Were it not for some super displays from goalkeeper Jordan O’Connor and defenders Conor Brady, Tom McGurk, Conor Kirwan, Eoin Foley and Rory Gallagher, ‘Boden would have been out of sight at half time.
Olaf’s used the break to compose themselves and get their focus right for the second half and started with all guns blazing and took total control of the game. Tom Keane added 2-2 during the second half to bring his tally for the game to 3-3. Glenn Soraghan, despite carrying a niggling knee problem, contributed 1-4 from play. Cian DeBurca got an exceptional goal and Eoin Foley and Jamie Deiseach each contributed a point each. It was an excellent second half performance from the boys and they’re starting to show the sort of football that we know they are capable of playing.
As usual, Sean McDaid had a magnificent game in the middle of the field as did his midfield partner Jack Dalton. What’s more encouraging is that all of the forwards managed to get on the score-sheet. Without doubt, Eoin Foley turned in a Man of the match performance. Besides the tremendous point that Eoin scored in the second half - from centre half back - he halted numerous ‘Boden attacks when they were in total control in the second part of the first half. He made countless attacks up the field throughout the game and really gave his all. ‘Boden’s half time lead was just too much to overcome in the second half but our score of 5-9 would win many a game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t good enough on Saturday though. Well done to ‘Boden on an excellent game of football. They have really set the standard for the rest of the teams in the group to reach.
The panel on duty on Saturday was Jordan O’Connor, Conor Brady, Tom McGurk, Conor Kirwan, Eoin Foley, Rory Gallagher, Sean McDaid, Jack Dalton, Tom Keane, Glenn Soraghan, Jamie Deiseach, Fiachra O’Sullivan, Cian DeBurca.
Looking at the table, it shows that team 1 have played 3 games and lost 3 games. Nonetheless, as the second half performance on Saturday will testify, this isn’t a genuine reflection of the team’s capability. We have a chance to rectify this when we entertain Ballinteer St. John’s in round 4 next week.
