Naomh Olaf 1-8 Fingallians 1-6

Naomh Olaf kicked off the 2010 season with a hard fought and exciting victory over Fingallians in the AIB cup. Both teams appeared depleted with Naomh Olaf having the only substitute on show. Naomh Olaf started well, taking an early lead with Simon Hickey scoring three points from play before combining well with John Tyrell to set up the latter for a well taken goal. Tyrell unfortunately injured himself and was replaced by Eric Horgan. Fingallians wayward shooting hurt them during the opening period. Stephen Stapleton in goals also pulled off two fine saves. The visitors did manage a scrappy goal towards the end of the half with Naomh Olaf’s Brian Begley rounding off the scoring to leave the home side 1-5 to 1-1 ahead at half time. The second half was a much closer affair. Yet again Fingallians poor shooting cost them as they were tackled and harried by a dogged Naomh Olaf back line. Darren Egan, Robbie Byrne and Conor Sobolewski putting in big tackles, it was rare that a Fingallians player had much time for a shot.  Hickey and Begley again did the damage for Naomh Olaf, keeping the scoreboard ticking over with two points and one point respectively as the teams traded score for score. Neither team managed to get the upper hand in the second half. The final whistle sounded after three minutes of injury team with Naomh Olaf getting the new season off to a winning start.
