U13 Footballers - February 19 2011 Print E-mail
Written by Ger Kirwan

With the 2nd round home tie against St. Judes failing victim to the weather, the U13 footballers were on the road again on Saturday February 19th in round 3 of the grading league when they travelled to Rosmini College to take on Na Fianna “B”. Having been on top for most of the previous game against Erin’s Isle, they were determined to put that defeat behind them and get back into the winning mode that they became accustomed to in the U12 competition.

The team were forced into some last minute changes due to illness and player unavailability but they got into their stride straight from start. Sean MacDaid won the throw in and gave a lovely pass to Fiachra O’Sullivan. Fiachra played an excellent ball into Tom Keane who in turn gave an exquisite pass to Joseph Rafferty who turned the full-back and slotted the ball to the bottom corner of net. A few minutes later Glenn Soraghan kicked a beautiful point under pressure to extend the Olaf’s lead. Na Fianna got on top for the next 10 minutes and scored 1-1 to bring them level. It was crucial that Olaf’s got back into the game at this stage and this is when Man of the Match Tom Keane really upped his performance. Tom took a pass from Eoin Foley and beat 3 Na Fianna back’s to score a goal. This was quickly followed by 2 points from Matthew O’Ceallaigh. Glenn Soraghan scored a goal soon after to increase the lead. Just before half time, Na Fianna scored 1-2 to leave the half time score at Olaf’s 3-4 Na Fianna 2-3.
Olaf’s totally dominated the second half with goals from Sean MacDaid and Cian DeBurca. Cian also scored a point to bring his tally for the day to 1-1. Points were also scored Jamie Deiseach (2), Tom Keane (4), Fiachra O’Sullivan (2) and Eoin Foley. Goalkeeper Cian Power-Kelly had an excellent game and he made some excellent saves throughout the game. The backs of Tom McGurk, Conor Kirwan, Rory Gallagher, Dara Coleman, Eoin Foley and Alex Start all turned in excellent performances with some marvellous harrying and blocking of their opponents. Despite being outplayed in the second half, full credit must go to Na Fianna who never gave up and put some lovely moves together to score 2-1. The full time score was Olaf’s 5-13 Na Fianna 4-4.
In the next round of the league the team play Naomh Barrog at home.
The panel on duty was Cian Power-Kelly, Rory Gallagher, Conor Kirwan, Tom McGurk, Alex Start, Eoin Foley (0-1), Dara Coleman, Sean MacDaid (1-0), Jamie Deiseach (0-2), Jack Dalton, Tom Keane (1-4), Fiachra O’Sullivan (0-2), Glenn Soraghan (1-1), Joseph Rafferty (1-0), Matthew O’Ceallaigh (0-2), Cian DeBurca (1-1).
