Following the summer break, the U13 footballers resumed their league campaign on Saturday September 10th with team 1 travelling to play St. Monica's and team 2 travelling to play Na Fianna C.
When they met earlier in the division 2 league, Olafs were victorious but when speaking to the Monica's mentors after the game, they informed us that they were missing some of their key players and that they expected to put up a better performance against us in the return leg. Unfortunately for team 1 they were true to their word and won on a final score of 2-5 to 1-6.
Met Eireann had forecasted that the tail end of Hurricane Katia would hit Ireland late on Sunday evening. However, it appeared it landed in Springdale Road at around 2 p.m. on Saturday when the wind made things difficult for both teams. Olaf's kicked 18 wide's during the game but not all could be attributed to the conditions. Monica's were more sharper and determined than Olaf's and deserved their win. The panel on Saturday was Jack Dalton, Alex Start, Conor Kirwan, Tom McGurk, Fiachra O'Sullivan, Matthew Deering, Rory Gallagher, Eoin Foley (0-2), Tom Keane (0-1), Glenn Soraghan (0-2), Joseph Raferty (1-0), Sean McDaid, Conor Brady, Dian DeBurca, Jamie Deasy and David Breathneach (0-1).
Next up for team 1 is Thomas Davis at home on September 24th.
Team 2 were lucky to come away with a win when they travelled to play Na Fianna C in Rosmini College in the division 8 league. Olaf's played Cuala C (a division 7 team) in a challenge game on the previous Thursday (September 8th) and after a great display came away with a narrow victory. If they could reproduce this form again then victory would be assured. Unfortunately they never reached the heights of their Thursday performance and had to work hard for their victory. The all-important goal came from Sean Sutton which gave some breathing space to the team who held out to win by 1-5 to 0-3. The panel was Ben Thornton, Ryan Murphy, Andrew Hayes, Cian McDaid, Gavin Soraghan, Cian Power Kelly, James Keogh, Jordan O'Connor (0-1), Tristin Kennedy (0-1), Declan Murphy, Adam O'Callaghan, Luke Connors, Fiachra McLoughlin (0-1), Eric Stapleton (0-2), Sean Sutton (1-0).
This team play their last game against Raheny B at home on September 24th. While Good Counsel have already secured the league title, a victory by 6 points or more will see them secure second place. |
