Book launch - Christy Cooney Address Print E-mail
Written by Bernard Keaveney

Treasured Memories Book Launch  -  Key Points From The GAA President's Address

The GAA President Christy Cooney surprised many as he opened his speech as he knew many club members personally.
He poked a little fun at some of our members especially those hailing from Cork. He congratulated Brendan on the
quality of the book and on his ability to get so many people to contribute content. He spoke of the importance of
capturing memories, of how a club’s history reminds us about where we have come from. Reflecting on what has been
achieved helps inspire future vision. He spoke about the importance of having a clearly stated future vision for
the club and the new five year strategy recently put in place

He praised the passion of the key people as reported to headquarters by Kieran Leddy who assisted with the strategy
development process. He praised Naomh Olaf on its success to date. The club should be proud of the contribution it
makes to local social cohesion and to the character development of young players. The book launch he said was about
clapping each other on the back for what had been achieved and building on  this solid foundation in planning for the next phase.

Christy Cooney -  On the contribution from Female club Members  - Bringing all gaelic games under one umbrella
He said he particularly wanted to acknowledge the contribution of the female club members and how he spotted
that we had five female secretaries and many female committee members over the years. He spoke of the massive
contribution women make to the association. He indicated that he had just come from a meeting of central
council where a decision was made to try and bring all the gaelic games into the association under one
umbrella. A one club structure overseeing all the games within one family would be a massive step forward
and he very much hoped it could be achieved over the next few years.

Christy Cooney  -  On Mick Brown a key visionary behind the decision to set up the club 30 years ago
Christy Cooney picked out Mick Brown as being one of the key visionaries behind the decision to set up the club
thirty years ago. He stated that a lot had been achieved by Naomh Olaf to date and he predicted that the
club would double the number of teams it manages over the next ten to twenty years.  He closed his speech by again
congratulating Brendan McGlynn on compiling the club thirty year history to such a high standard.
