Under 13 Footballers in action

The Naomh Olaf U13s team 2 took to the pitch at home on Saturday afternoon to take on near rivals Kilmacud Crokes in the fourth game of the Division 12 Gaelic Football grading league.  The match was played in challenging weather conditions and the visitors set about their task from the throw in.  While the Naomh Olaf boys defended well they ended the first half down by four points. The second half started poorly for the home team and Crokes stretched their lead to twelve points but, like many a Naomh Olaf team, the lads never gave up and came charging back to close the margin to six points with less than five minutes to go.  As the clock edged towards the full time whistle our Sandyford lads scored a goal and in the last minute of the game advanced on the Crokes goal and repeated the feat to draw the match on a final score of 7:10 to 8:7. A remarkable come back and a great performance from all the team.  An-mhaith a bhuachaillí!!

With the Cuala senior hurlers taking part in the All-Ireland Club semi-final, the U13 Naomh Olaf team 1 Division 4 grading league game against Cuala was moved to Sunday and following the heavy rainfall late in the week manager Noel O'Grady took the decision to switch the game to the Astro Park in Stepaside.  The Naomh Olaf team, following recent defeats, knew that the game was a must win game to keep their league grading campaign alive.  Early goals for Naomh Olaf set the tone for the encounter as they played into the wind.  It was a welcome return to the skill and physicality with which the team played in the past and they ended the first half leading 4:2 to 0:2.  A rejuvenated Cuala team returned to the field for the second half but the home team stood firm and showed their superior fitness and skill going on to win the game 6:6 to 2:4.  A great performance and a welcome return to winning ways.

The Under 13s also want to thank David Byrne for taking the time to visit their training last Tuesday to present their runner-up league medals for last year and to give them some pointers on how to make sure they always play at their best.  They obviously took his advice!
