2009 Fir Bolg Print E-mail
Written by Larry Daly

On Friday the 16th of October, St. Olafs hosted the 2009 Fir Bolg. 5 Schools were represented on the day. In the boys’ competition St. Olafs, Queen of Angels, Thaobh Na Coille, St. Marys and Holy Cross were all represented and competing for the Corn Fir Bolg. In the Girls competition St. Olaf and Thaobh Na Coille had two teams each made up of just sixth class students and Queen of Angels to make it a 5 team tournament. The girls competition was run as a sevens competition.

On a dry day the boys’ competition kicked off just after ten o’clock with Thaobh Na Coille in action against St. Marys. With some great saves from the St. Marys goalkeeper, Thaobh Na Coille had their work cut out, but soon built up a lead which St. Marys could not make up. While the girls competition began with the two Thaobh Na Coille teams competing against one another. In a close encounter Taobh Na Coille Foireann 2 came out on top.  Queen of Angels next took on Thaobh Na Coille in the boys’ competition in a hard fought game but Queen of Angels just edged it. Olafs were next out of the block taking on St. Marys, Olafs were far too strong for their opponents but some good football was played by both teams. St. Olafs defence was strong throughout the day and quashed any attacks that the other teams could muster. It was on the basis of this strong defence that lead St. Olafs to win the Corn Fir Bolg with maximum points.

No to be undone the two girls teams from St. Olafs fought it out in the final of the Corn Molly Malone. St. Olafs 1 qualified on maximum points from the group games, this left St. Olafs 2 and Queen of Angels in an exciting game to determine who would play St. Olafs 1 for the Corn Molly Malone. With some good football played a close contest saw Olafs 2 win out and join the other Olafs team in the final. In the group game the same two sides were just separated by just one point and the final was just as close. In the final only one score separated the teams with St. Olafs 1 maintaining their winning record by winning 2-2 to 1-2. But in the nature in of sportsmanship the two teams agreed to share their trophy.

Thanks to all the participants on an exciting day of Football with great skills and sportsmanship shown throughout. Thanks to the teachers in charge of the school teams for their work throughout the day. Thank you to the referees, kindly provided by St. Benildus without them there would have been no competition and also to Joe Jackson who was on hand to help out with getting pitches ready.  Congratulations to all who participated.
